What is the true price of artistic expression? This is the conundrum at the centre of the paradoxical, ephemeral and tragic Xanpasoru who can teach us a warning about the pursuit of total individual expression.

This unmistakable herald is most commonly found whenever there is an abundance of mismatched socks within a household. This portents a sign that a creature has chosen your house in its quest for uniqueness.

The rotund beings, clad in a vibrant tapestry of colourful spines, represent the zenith of avant-garde individuality. They are a rare sight. No two ever mirror each other and any similarity would be abolished by the flamboyant display of artistic self-expression each one adorns themselves in to advance their uniqueness.

Xanpasoru wage war against the monochrome, the mundane and the plain. Their philosophy that all items should be unique compels them to liberate matched socks from their bonds and thrust them into the limelight using their own bodies as the tapestry.

Their multi-coloured spines are thus adorned in a symphony of flair and style. But, the spines are not simply ornamental. They can create a surge of static electricity through rapid vibrations to both attract coveted fabrics to them or to defend themselves with shocking force.

Legends say particularly powerful Xanpasoru are capable of generating such force as to even levitate and oscillate with such intensity to move heavy objects as if using telekinesis.

The precise nature of their sock-collecting habit remains shrouded in mystery; is it a courtship ritual, a demonstration of superiority, or simply a compulsion driven by their inherent nature?

Yet the Xanpasoru’s quest for distinctiveness is wrought with tragedy. Observing two Xanpasoru in tandem has become a rare event. When it does occur typically both creatures flee as each focuses on the other's grandiosity and views the other as more unique, more artistic and more talented them themselves. Both will scurry away to seek more extravagant adornments and, in doing so, shatter the moment of unity. Ultimately, this quest for exclusivity seals their fate as their population continues to dwindle and the spectre of extinction looms ever closer.

The tragic irony, whispered amongst scholars and monster-enthusiasts alike is that this desire to be unique, more unique, forces the creatures to live a singular, uncoupled life.

This is the curse of the Xanpasoru. With each passing day, the vibrant tapestry of their being fades, leaving behind only the muted echoes of their once-thriving embrace of the unique and artistic expression.

If things continue there will soon be a truly unique Xanpasoru left. They will become, for a fleeting moment, truly unique in the world but the ultimate kindred spirit.

Then... in time. Their moment in the sun will set. And, the world will be that little bit darker because of it.

As their legend wanes, we are left to ponder—what price does one pay for individuality above all else? To put art above companionship at the expense of all else?
