In the reflection of every mirror, every selfie screen, will be a glimpse of a Gorflug checking itself out and commenting that "this is its good side."
These monsters are on a relentless quest for aesthetic approval, applause and adoration as the "Beauty Queen" of the monster realm. So much so, it has even evolved a sash as a tail.
Each day is another chance at an elaborate performance and a new look to try out. They use their rubbery, liquid-like skin to morph and twist their flesh into any shape and colour.
They have a psionic ability to 'read' what those around them think is beautiful and adapt to fit that person's perception of beauty. However as everyone's perception of beauty is subjective, and ever-changing, so too becomes the Gorflug's body as it shifts to appeal to all around it.
The result is in monster in constant transformation and recreation. Flesh sluices into new forms, skin tones bloom and wilt rapidly and its transformation is so rapid it leaves bone exposed. Though harmless to the creature it is off putting to witness.
The resulting chaotic canvas of contorted flesh often leads to revulsion instead of its intended admiration. Some say this twisted form is an outward manifestation of its inner turmoil. the cursed result of its desire to appeal as everything to everyone.
There is a strong lesson about the fleeting nature of beauty and the need to conform to modern trends in magazines, movies and Instagram reels can lead to overreach but I feel that misses the deeper meaning of this monster.
In truth, whatever our sense of beauty is we should own it and rock out unique look. Gorflug may be revolting to others but every time one is seen checking its reflection - even in a twisted form - you can see it is owning its style. It cannot help how its body evolved and naturally reacts to others, but it can help how it feels about it.
From what I have seen. It feels good. We can learn to shed our fear of what others think ideas of beauty and remain true to ourselves, content in our skins and imperfections alike.
The journey of the Gorflug teaches us a poignant truth—embracing our authentic selves, in all our imperfect glory, is a solid path to enjoyment.
And perhaps that is the truest form of beauty there is.
