Blahvae Dah

When you are caught in that limbo between where you were and where you are going, and now neither place looks like home look around for the telltale signs of the Blahvae Dah.

This monster resides in the in-between spaces. It resembles both a caterpillar and a butterfly but is forever stuck on the cusp of a metamorphosis that never seems to fully arise.

Caught between two forms they drift through the world pressing up against boundaries and testing new possibilities for all possibilities are still open for them. Of note are their flexible eyes that constantly search around looking for the thing that might push them towards their final form.

What that form could be is anyone's guess. Some monster hunters believe the Blahvae Dah is the larval stage of another champion of change, the Ravellion, though no one has ever proved it.

Perhaps because they are eager to understand, these observant creatures gather around people in the middle of a transition themselves. It could be physical, such as a new hair style, educational such as being halfway through your studies or anything in between. Anything that sees a person caught in-between two worlds draws them near.

Unfortunately the goo they excrete when drawn in by their curiosity can bring on sudden waves of contagious self-consciousness. This sudden sensation of feeling exposed, in the spotlight or unable to make the final change can leave some feeling as awkward as the Blahva Dah.

It is initially shocking but, trust me, it will soon pass. Take a moment, breathe and use your own, less flexible eyes, to examine yourself before reacting to its effect. Awkwardness is temporary and the courage to stand in the open while changing is something the Blahvae Dah teaches in its own way.

It is unashamed of its own state. In fact, it is quite content to remain in between as its forever chirpy smile denotes. It is in no rush to reach its final form and celebrates its progress as it goes.

Watching it, I learned not to mourn the feeling of being stuck. Progress is not always visible, and change rarely is a straight line. Learn to pause. Take stock. Awkwardness can be easily mistaken for failure but, while you may not be there yet, remember that however far you have come on your journey is remarkable in itself. There is beauty at being in the in between just as their is beauty in the Blahvae Dah's misshapen form.

You are becoming, and becoming is a place worth noticing even if it is the in between.
